The Director-General of Media and Publicity to the Kano State Government has defended Governor Abba Kabir Yusufโ€™s decision to leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), insisting that the move was not driven by personal political ambition.

According to the DG, the governorโ€™s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was motivated by the need to strategically align Kano State with the federal government in order to attract increased funding, key federal projects, and greater development opportunities for the state.

He explained that remaining in opposition at the centre had continued to limit Kanoโ€™s access to critical federal interventions, adding that the governorโ€™s decision was taken after extensive consultations with political stakeholders, elders, and interest groups across the state.

โ€œThe governorโ€™s priority has always been the welfare of Kano people. This decision is about governance, not personal ambition or political survival,โ€ the DG said.

The media aide stressed that Governor Yusuf remains committed to his campaign promises, noting that his administrationโ€™s focus on education, healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment would not change as a result of the defection.

He also dismissed claims that the move was a betrayal of the electorate, arguing that aligning with the ruling party at the federal level would place Kano in a stronger position to negotiate and secure resources needed for development.

The defection has sparked mixed reactions within Kanoโ€™s political space, with supporters describing it as a pragmatic step, while critics accuse the governor of abandoning the platform that brought him to power.

Despite the controversy, the state government maintained that the decision was taken in good faith and in the best interest of Kano State and its residents.
