The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise beginning on April 25, as part of renewed efforts to improve public hygiene, strengthen waste management systems and promote a cleaner urban environment.

State officials disclosed that the exercise, which had been suspended for some time, would now be held on the last Saturday of every month across all local government areas and local council development areas. Residents are expected to actively participate by cleaning their surroundings, clearing drainage channels and ensuring proper disposal of waste.

Authorities explained that the move is aimed at tackling persistent environmental challenges such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse, blocked drainage systems and the growing threat of flooding, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

The government also stated that relevant environmental agencies would be deployed to monitor compliance during the sanitation period. Movement restrictions are expected to be enforced within designated hours to allow residents carry out cleaning activities safely and effectively.

Residents, market operators, transport unions and community development associations have been urged to cooperate with sanitation officials and adopt sustainable waste management practices beyond the exercise period.

Officials emphasised that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility, noting that improved sanitation would help reduce the spread of diseases, enhance public safety and contribute to the overall development of Lagos State.
