Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has raised fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of the state, warning that bandits have taken control of several ungoverned spaces.

The governor made the disclosure while addressing stakeholders, expressing deep concern about the activities of armed groups operating in remote and poorly policed areas. He said the growing presence of bandits in forested and border communities poses a serious threat to residents, economic activities, and regional stability.

According to Mohammed, the situation requires urgent federal intervention, stressing that states cannot independently handle the scale of the security challenge without stronger collaboration and support from the Federal Government.

He noted that the vast and difficult terrains across some northern states have created gaps in surveillance and security presence, enabling criminal elements to establish operational bases.

Call for Presidential Intervention

The Bauchi governor appealed directly for stronger presidential support and enhanced military deployment to flush out criminal groups occupying these areas. He emphasised the need for improved intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination, and sustained operations to reclaim affected territories.

He also called for investment in technology-driven security solutions, including aerial surveillance and improved communication systems, to prevent further expansion of bandit strongholds.

Impact on Communities

Residents in affected communities have reportedly faced attacks, kidnappings, and displacement, with farming and local trade disrupted due to fear of violence. The governor warned that if not urgently addressed, the insecurity could undermine development efforts and worsen humanitarian conditions.

Security analysts have long described โ€œungoverned spacesโ€ as areas where the presence of law enforcement and government authority is weak, allowing non-state actors to operate freely.

The governor reiterated his administrationโ€™s commitment to supporting security agencies while urging citizens to cooperate with authorities by sharing credible intelligence.

More reactions are expected from federal security agencies as concerns over insecurity continue to dominate national discourse.
