Abia State Government has commenced the demolition and reconstruction of the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology, Aba, as part of efforts to modernise health education infrastructure in the state.
The project, which involves pulling down structures that are over 70 years old, will give rise to a brand-new, purpose-built campus designed to meet contemporary standards for training health professionals.
Speaking during the flag-off of the project, state officials said the exercise aligns with Governor Alex Ottiโs vision to rebuild critical public institutions and improve the quality of manpower development in the health sector. They noted that many of the existing buildings had become unsafe and unsuitable for modern academic and clinical training.
According to the government, the new campus will feature modern lecture halls, laboratories, administrative blocks, hostels, and improved learning facilities aimed at creating a conducive environment for students and staff. The reconstruction is also expected to boost the collegeโs accreditation status and enhance its capacity to produce skilled health workers.
The state government assured students, staff, and residents that adequate measures would be put in place to minimise disruptions during the construction period, adding that temporary arrangements would be made to ensure academic activities continue.
Residents and stakeholders in Aba have welcomed the development, describing it as a long-overdue intervention that will not only uplift the institution but also contribute to the overall improvement of healthcare delivery in Abia State.
The reconstruction project is part of broader reforms in the education and health sectors, as the Abia State Government continues its drive to rehabilitate public facilities and restore confidence in state-owned institutions.
