Senator Ned Nwoko has restated his push for the Social Media Regulation Bill, saying online defamation is becoming a serious problem in Nigeria.
Nwoko explained that a recent viral TikTok video falsely claiming he โpaid to kill Regina Danielsโ shows how dangerous misinformation has become in an unregulated digital space. He said incidents like this highlight the need for stricter laws to protect citizens from false accusations and damaging content.
The senator noted that the bill, which he sponsored, passed second reading in the Senate on March 18. According to him, the proposed law aims to promote responsible online behaviour, reduce harmful posts, and prevent social media from being used as a tool for blackmail or character assassination.
He stressed that while freedom of expression remains important, it should not be abused to spread lies or endanger lives.
