Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, on Tuesday postponed his ceremonial defection to the All Progressives Congress, citing the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State. He said proceeding with politics at such a time would be insensitive to the nationโs mood.
In a statement he personally signed, Kefas explained that the security tragedy required sober reflection rather than celebrations or political gatherings. The governor noted that the safety of the abducted students was a priority that overshadowed any planned political activity.
The APC, in a separate statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, also confirmed the postponement of the reception, adding that a new date would be communicated in due course.
The ceremony had earlier been scheduled for Wednesday, November 19, 2025. Preparations were already underway, and a viral video had shown Kefas inspecting the stadium where the rally was to be held.
Kefas was noticeably absent at the PDP elective convention in Ibadan on November 15. During the event, he was seen at the proposed defection venue, further fueling speculation about his planned move to the APC.
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, the governor said he was leaving the PDP to align with President Bola Tinubu in supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda. He added that Taraba was ready to welcome party leaders for the defection rally.
On Monday, November 17, several members of the Taraba State House of Assembly and the State Executive Council resigned from the PDP and declared for the APC, intensifying expectations of the governorโs formal defection before the postponement.
