The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has reportedly proposed a 40 per cent salary increase for lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), according to sources familiar with the development in Abuja.
The fresh offer comes as ASUU leadership prepares to return to the negotiating table with a government delegation headed by Yayale Ahmed. The new proposal follows a recent rejection of a 35 per cent pay rise by ASUU, which described the earlier offer as insufficient.
At its latest National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, ASUU members from branches across the country reviewed the governmentโs 40 per cent proposal. Branch leaders were tasked with returning to campuses to update members before the union makes a final decision.
A union insider, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the confidentiality of ongoing negotiations, confirmed that discussions between ASUU and the government are expected to continue next week.
The stakes are high: ASUU has repeatedly demanded the full implementation of the long-overdue 2009 agreement with FG, payment of outstanding allowances and revitalisation of university funding. The union warns that piecemeal offers โ even with a 40 per cent pay rise โ may still fall short of addressing the systemic challenges affecting lecturers and public universities at large.
