The Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Area Development Commission (HYPPDEC), Abubakar Yelwa, has revealed that the Federal Governmentโ€™s N4 trillion debt to power-generating companies is stalling key development projects.

Yelwa stated this on Wednesday during the flag-off ceremony for the distribution of power tillers, life jackets, and relief materials in Niger State, noting that the debt burden has hindered the commission from meeting financial obligations to affected communities.

He explained that once the Federal Government settles its debt to the generating companies, they would, in turn, fulfill their commitments to the commission โ€” enabling HYPPDEC to expand its interventions in agriculture, infrastructure, and community development.

According to him, the commission has distributed 850 units of 13HP power tillers, including 165 for Niger State, 4,000 life jackets, and other relief materials such as โ‚ฆ10 million in cash, 500 bags of NPK fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides for flood-affected communities in Mokwa and other LGAs.

Yelwa commended Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago and the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, for their presence at the flag-off event, noting that the commissionโ€™s goals align with President Bola Tinubuโ€™s Renewed Hope Agenda focused on empowerment, agriculture, and community resilience.
