Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna state, has called on Nigerians to allow late President Muhammadu Buhari to โrest in peace,โ warning against attempts to turn his legacy into a tool for narrow interests.
El-Rufai made the appeal amid public debate following the launch of From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, a biography written by Charles Omole and unveiled on Monday at the State House by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement shared on his official platform, el-Rufai said while Nigerians are free to assess Buhariโs years in public service, such reflections should be honest and not driven by personal or political agendas. He cautioned that selective narratives risk distorting history and undermining sober national reflection.
The former governor described Buhari as a leader whose life spanned military service and democratic governance, noting that his record, like that of any leader, should be discussed with balance and restraint.
El-Rufaiโs comments have added to the ongoing conversation around the book, with supporters praising the biography as a tribute, while critics argue it may oversimplify or sanitize contentious aspects of Buhariโs leadership.
