The Cross River State Government has commended the Federal Government for its renewed commitment toward strengthening Nigeriaโs public primary school system.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Stephen Odey, gave the commendation during the induction of 56 volunteer teachers into the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. The teachers were trained by Save the Children International with support from the Global Partnership for Education. Odey, represented by the Ogoja Local Government Education Secretary, Ernest Otong, praised the FGโs โsteady support to public schools,โ noting that the newly certified teachers would help close long-standing manpower gaps that have affected teaching quality across the state.
According to him, many schools have struggled for years with inadequate personnel, but the intervention, combined with the state governmentโs ongoing recruitment drive, will enhance learning outcomes.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, represented by senior ministry official Godwin Odey, also stressed the importance of stronger partnerships in addressing persistent challenges in basic education. He applauded Save the Children International for its timely contribution, saying the programme is helping to rebuild public trust in the foundational education system.
Save the Children Internationalโs Education Coordinator, Oyeniyi Omopariola, described the certification exercise as a strategic investment in human capital, aimed at improving teaching quality in underserved communities. He urged state governments and universal basic education boards to fast-track the deployment of the newly certified teachers to maximise the gains of the GPE-supported initiative.
Administering the oath of office, TRCNโs Director of Certification and Licensing, Abimbola Okunola, said the collaboration among TRCN, Save the Children International and the Global Partnership for Education offers a sustainable model for expanding access to quality education in hard-to-reach areas.
