President Bola Tinubu has rejected Nigeriaโ€™s re-designation as a โ€œCountry of Particular Concernโ€ by former U.S. President Donald Trump, insisting the label misrepresents Nigeriaโ€™s religious reality.

Tinubu, in a statement on his official X handle on Saturday, said Nigeria remains a democracy built on constitutional guarantees of religious liberty, stressing that the countryโ€™s image as intolerant of religion is false and unfair.

He added that religious freedom and tolerance have always been core to Nigeriaโ€™s identity, emphasizing that his administration continues to engage both Christian and Muslim leaders while addressing insecurity affecting all citizens, regardless of faith or region.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to deepening cooperation with the United States and global partners to protect religious communities, saying Nigeria โ€œopposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.โ€
