The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has faulted the title of a new movie by Nollywood actress Ini Edo, describing it as offensive and insensitive to Christians and the sacred nature of the Christmas celebration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, CAN said the title, “A Very Dirty Christmas,” undermines the spiritual significance of Christmas, which it described as a solemn period marking the birth of Jesus Christ and a time of holiness, reflection and goodwill.
The association noted that while it respects artistic freedom and creative expression, such liberty should be exercised with a sense of responsibility, especially when it touches on religious symbols and values held dearly by millions of Nigerians.
According to CAN, attaching words perceived as negative or vulgar to Christmas could promote moral decline and misrepresent the essence of the Christian faith, particularly among young people who consume entertainment content in large numbers.
The body urged filmmakers and content creators to be more mindful of religious sensitivities and called for greater consultation and restraint when producing works that reference sacred events or seasons.
CAN also appealed to regulatory authorities in the entertainment industry to pay closer attention to movie titles and themes, stressing the need to strike a balance between creativity and respect for religious beliefs.
As of the time of filing this report, Ini Edo and the producers of the movie had not publicly responded to the concerns raised by the Christian body.
