Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has renewed his call for a single term for elected officials and political appointees, arguing that it would eliminate laziness and promote accountability in governance.
Speaking on Friday during the inauguration of newly nominated commissioners and elected local government chairmen and vice chairmen, Bago said he had deferred decisive actionsโincluding sacking underperforming appointeesโbecause of political considerations tied to re-election.
He stated that some officials had consistently failed in their duties but remained in office because of the โtomorrowโ mindset created by multi-term politics.
According to him, a single term would compel appointees and elected leaders to give their best since they would have only โone shot at governance.โ
Bago also advocated for state police and community policing, insisting that decentralised security structures would improve safety more than the current centralised policing system.
