Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and several senior leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party were absent on Tuesday as the party conducted its governorship primary in Osogbo, where Adedamola Adebayo emerged as the PDP flagbearer for the 2026 election.
Adebayo secured 919 votes out of 957 accredited delegates who took part in the exercise. Announcing the outcome, chairman of the primary election committee, Humphrey Abba, noted that 20 votes were void and confirmed Adebayo as the elected candidate.
Moments after the exercise ended, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, led some lawmakers to the venue and confronted individuals still present. A confrontation erupted, during which a suspected hoodlum assaulted an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Videos from the scene showed Egbedun entering the hall and engaging in a heated exchange with the electoral officer before the attack occurred. Another recording captured a bus conveying several people being intercepted by a mob. The passengers were beaten and later taken to the House of Assembly Police Post in Osogbo, where they addressed reporters.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Wakili Aderemi, a 68-year-old driver from Ibadan, said they were not in Osogbo for any political activity but for a zonal meeting related to the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
He explained that they had stopped at a nearby hotel to take drinks when the mob confronted them. โWe came from Oyo State for a meeting to decide our next Oyo chairman of NURTW. None of us had party tags. Sixteen of us came from Oyo. We donโt know anything about a party primary. I am not a politician,โ he said.
