₦212.8bn Money Laundering Case: Outrage as Malami Returns Home in Private Jet After Bail
Public outrage has continued to trail the actions of Abubakar Malami and his family following his return to Kebbi State after meeting bail conditions in an ongoing ₦212.8 billion money-laundering case.
Malami, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, was granted bail by a court in Abuja over allegations bordering on large-scale financial misconduct. However, what followed his release has sparked widespread condemnation across the country.
According to reports, Malami and members of his family travelled back to Kebbi State aboard a chartered private jet, where they were received by a crowd of jubilant relatives and supporters. Videos and images of the reception quickly circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism from Nigerians who described the scene as insensitive and provocative.
Reacting to the development, public affairs commentator Mobolaji Sanusi condemned the display, describing it as “a shameful spectacle” that reflects the moral decline of society.
“Malami and his family, after meeting the bail conditions stipulated by the judge, returned to Kebbi, his home state, where a shameful spectacle occurred. They insensitively rode in a chartered private jet to a waiting crowd of jubilating relatives and supporters,” Sanusi said.
“This disgraceful display involving key suspects in a ₦212.8 billion money-laundering case sadly underscores how low our contemporary, but mostly depraved, communities have sunk.”
Many Nigerians on social media echoed similar sentiments, questioning why individuals facing serious corruption charges are still celebrated and treated as heroes. Critics argue that such public displays undermine the fight against corruption and send the wrong message to younger generations.
The case against Malami is still before the court, and legal proceedings are ongoing. Anti-corruption advocates have called on the judiciary and law-enforcement agencies to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated and prosecuted without fear or favour.
As public debate intensifies, the incident has once again highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing struggle with corruption, accountability, and the culture of glorifying power and wealth, even in the face of serious criminal allegations.
