The crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party intensified on Tuesday as the faction aligned with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, announced the expulsion of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, and party elder statesman Bode George.

In a statement issued after an emergency meeting in Abuja, the Wike-led bloc accused the affected members of persistent anti-party activities and alleged refusal to participate in internal reconciliation efforts. The faction said the decision was unanimous and necessary to โ€œrestore discipline and reposition the PDP ahead of future elections.โ€

The development marks one of the most dramatic escalations since the partyโ€™s post-2023 split, deepening fears that the opposition may enter the 2027 election cycle heavily fragmented. Sources within the faction claim the expulsions were triggered by escalating disagreements over control of party structures at the national level.

However, loyalists of Makinde and Mohammed swiftly rejected the announcement, describing it as unconstitutional and lacking any legal standing. They argued that the Wike group has no authority to impose sanctions, insisting that disciplinary decisions rest solely with the National Working Committee.

Reacting separately, Chief Bode George dismissed the move as โ€œpolitical theatre,โ€ saying no legitimate party organ would recognise the expulsions. He accused the faction of attempting to destabilise the PDP through illegal parallel activities.

Amid rising tensions, analysts warn that the party may face further divisions unless urgent steps are taken to resolve factional disputes. The PDP National Working Committee is expected to make an official pronouncement in the coming days as pressure mounts for a unified response.
