The Rivers State Government says it is finalising arrangements to enrol its workforce into the Employeesโ Compensation Scheme of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund. The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, disclosed this while receiving executive members of the Trade Union Congress, Rivers State Council, during a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Head of Information and Public Relations in the SSGโs office, Dr. Juliana Masi, noted that the state is currently reviewing the policies guiding the scheme. With Governor Siminalayi Fubaraโs approval, the scheme will cover medical care, rehabilitation for workers who suffer illnesses or injuries on the job, and compensation for families in cases of fatal accidents.
Anabraba said the government has already met with NSITF officials and is committed to ensuring the scheme takes off in the state. He stressed that workersโ welfare remains a priority, adding that the initiative will reassure employees of protection and support while discharging their duties.
He added that the administration also plans to collaborate with private operators, especially those in the construction sector, to ensure their participation in the scheme as part of their operational responsibilities in the state.
The SSG also condemned the indiscriminate parking of trucks on major roads in Rivers, warning that such actions pose risks to road users and harm the environment. He urged the TUC to sensitise its affiliatesโincluding shipping, clearing, tipper, quarry, and road transport unionsโon the dangers of illegal parking and the need to obey state traffic laws.
He warned that the government may be compelled to take stronger measures if operators fail to comply.
In March 2025, NSITF Managing Director, Oluwaseun Faleye, announced tougher enforcement to address the persistent issue of non-compliance among states and employers. He said the Federal Government was stepping up efforts to ensure all Ministries, Departments and Agencies adopt the Employeesโ Compensation Scheme for their workers.
