Elder statesman and founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Alhaji Abubakar Tanko Yakasai, has dismissed allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, saying such claims misrepresent the countryโ€™s complex security challenges.

Yakasai stated that Christians and Muslims have lived side by side for decades across various regions, insisting that Nigeriaโ€™s conflicts stem largely from criminality, banditry, and socioeconomic issuesโ€”not a religious agenda.

He faulted some foreign media outlets and former U.S. President Donald Trump for amplifying what he described as exaggerated narratives that portray Nigeria as a country divided by religious violence. According to him, such portrayals fuel unnecessary tension and damage national unity.

The elder statesman urged Nigerians and the international community to rely on verified information, stressing that promoting divisive narratives could worsen the nationโ€™s fragile security situation. He called for collective efforts toward addressing insecurity, tackling poverty, and fostering peaceful coexistence among all ethnic and religious groups.
