Presidential candidate and former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, has cautioned that the conviction of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, could further heighten national tension if not managed with fairness, restraint and dialogue.
Obi, in a statement on Friday, noted that Nigeria was already dealing with serious security challenges, and any development capable of triggering emotional or regional reactions should be approached with sensitivity.
He urged the Federal Government to prioritise national unity and consider political and diplomatic engagement as a more sustainable approach to peacebuilding.
According to him, the judgement has sparked reactions, particularly in the South-East, and could deepen feelings of marginalisation if people believe their concerns are ignored.
Obi stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved through force alone, but through justice, empathy and constructive dialogue among all stakeholders.
He appealed for calm, warning that violence or unrest would only worsen the countryโs fragile security situation, and encouraged leaders to adopt measures that promote reconciliation and trust while upholding the rule of law.
