Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has explained the details of the meeting held years ago between some then–opposition leaders and American officials, dismissing claims that it involved discussions about genocide.
He said the engagement was strictly focused on advocating for a transparent, free and fair election in Nigeria, contrary to narratives circulating online.

Ameachi noted that the visit, which took place during heightened political tension, was part of efforts to ensure democratic integrity and electoral accountability.
He added that those pushing a different account were doing so for political reasons and to mislead the public.

He urged Nigerians to avoid misinformation and to remain committed to supporting democratic processes.
