The Department of State Services has invited former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, over recent public comments the agency considers capable of heightening national tension.

Sources within the DSS said the invitation followed internal concerns about remarks Baba-Ahmed made during a recent national television appearance.

According to one senior officer, Baba-Ahmed had accused the judiciary and the military of enabling the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The source added that he went as far as making statements interpreted as inciting the military, alleging that the inauguration emboldened them “to look you in the face and call you ‘bloody fools.’”

Security officials said such rhetoric, given the country’s political climate, could inflame public sentiment and mirror destabilising narratives seen in places like Guinea-Bissau.

Another insider explained that the invitation was preventive rather than punitive, aimed at clarifying the intent behind his statements.
The officer noted that describing government efforts to improve national security as a “joke” could weaken public trust in state institutions if left unaddressed.

Baba-Ahmed had, on Thursday, appeared on Arise News where he criticised the Federal Government’s planned recruitment of additional security personnel.
He also faulted the President’s advice to governors on the need to reconsider boarding schools in insecure areas, arguing that such guidance could allow bandits to influence national decisions.
