Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has revealed that late President Muhammadu Buhari once believed rumours within Aso Rock alleging she planned to kill him, a development that reportedly affected his health routine in 2017.
Aisha Buhari made the disclosure in a newly released biography titled From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr Charles Omole and launched at the State House on Monday.
According to her account, the rumours led the former president to begin locking his room and altering his daily habits, including abandoning a carefully managed feeding and supplement schedule she had supervised for years.
She explained that Buhariโs 154-day medical leave in 2017 was not caused by poisoning or a mysterious illness but by disruptions to his nutrition and feeding routine after they moved into the Presidential Villa.
The former First Lady said she had previously overseen Buhariโs meals and supplements at fixed times, a system she described as essential for maintaining the strength of an elderly man with a history of malnutrition-related symptoms.
Aisha Buhari noted that she had convened a meeting with key officials, including the presidentโs physician, security aides and household staff, to explain the importance of the routine and the need for consistency.
However, she said the plan gradually collapsed after rumours spread that she intended to harm her husband, a claim she said Buhari believed for a short period.
She added that as a result, meals were delayed or missed, supplements were stopped, and the disruption eventually took a toll on his health.
The 600-page biography spans 22 chapters and documents Buhariโs life from his early years in Daura, Katsina State, to his final days in a London hospital in July 2025.
