Sixteen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, citing internal division within the PDP.

Amaewhule announced the development during plenary on Friday, stating that the lawmakers reached the decision due to what he described as a โ€œclear divisionโ€ in the PDP that had lingered without resolution.

The mass defection marks a major shift in the political atmosphere of Rivers State, coming amid heightened tension between factions loyal to different power blocs within the state.
