Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed deep concern that the Boko Haram insurgency has endured for 15 years, far outlasting the 30-month Nigerian Civil War.
Obasanjo, speaking on Sunday, said it was disturbing that a crisis involving a non-state group has persisted for over a decade and a half despite multiple security interventions. He warned that allowing such a conflict to stretch this long poses serious risks to national stability, development, and public confidence in the countryโs security architecture.
He noted that the comparison between the short duration of the civil war and the prolonged insurgency should prompt urgent reflection and reform in Nigeriaโs approach to internal conflict resolution. Obasanjo stressed that the nation must rethink its strategies if it hopes to bring the insurgency to a decisive and lasting end.
