Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has refuted social media reports alleging that he gifted a Toyota SUV to Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer involved in a recent confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released by his media aide, Paul Ibe, on Wednesday, Atiku described the reports as โ€œfalse, malicious, and a desperate attempt to drag his name into an issue he knows nothing about.โ€

He said the former vice president had neither met nor communicated with the officer and urged the public to disregard what he termed as โ€œfake news peddled by mischief makers.โ€

โ€œThe report suggesting that His Excellency Atiku Abubakar rewarded Lieutenant Yerima with a car is completely untrue and without any basis. We advise the public to treat it as one of the many fabrications often circulated for political mischief,โ€ the statement read.

Atiku also reiterated his belief in the professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces and called for calm over the altercation, which sparked reactions nationwide after videos of the incident surfaced online.
